Many of these"field studies" will be used later as a reference for creating Studio paintings.

I was painting "Midsummer Mowing" in a field just off to the right.  When I  packed up and began my hike home, I was struck by getting this reversed view of my usual route.  I  wasn't used to looking back, and up the hill. Just wonderful.

The fields of Knox Farm are really the heart and soul of the Park for me. On this particular morning, Northrup Field, shown here, was at its most mature state and alive with all kinds of life. Most amazing were the amount of butterflies.

In an age when visual media are easily produced and propagated, a well crafted painting has one clear advantage, it has a real, tactile surface. Depth is not just an illusion of pixels, but a concrete quality of pigments layered, manipulated, and blended.
