I grew up in East Aurora, NY a small town south of Buffalo. The Western New York region as a whole has remarkable natural and cultural features, and architects from Wright to Richardson, Sullivan to Olmsted, have examples of work here. This fragile, magnificent landscape inspired me to draw and paint at an early age and develop a deep love and concern for our environment, both man-made and natural. I chose to pursue architecture in College and practiced for many years afterwards, till I made a mid-career change into teaching in 2001. “Art is the means to jolt ourselves and others awake to the wonder of being alive in this stupendous universe”. - Robert Henri So, as an artist, sculptor, and architect, it may be about a building, a landscape, even a figure, or portrait. What I do know is that painting, especially Direct Painting, allows me to participate in this dynamic like nothing else ever has. My goal is to seek the technical excellence required to give compelling expression to these subjects. |
